B.O.A. Special Games

Julius’s Story

As a participant of the Special Olympics Area Games, Julius competed in the wheelchair race and with two feet pushing him to the finish line, he won first place. “Why two feet?” one would ask. The answer would be, Julius refused to get an electric chair to compete. He felt that it would hinder him from getting the job done- his way. Therefore, as always, he decided that he could win this race on his own. If we had to equate that experience to another, one could assimilate it to the story of “The Little Engine That Could”. Julius has always had an attitude of “I can”.When it came to the wheelchair competition him saying, “I think I can” was just the fuel he needed. As he continued to advance towards the finish line, the crowd chanted cheers that gave him the motivation to keep going. The bleachers were not filled with patients that day. They were filled with athletes and Julius was one of them.

Throughout his life, Julius has been faced with challenges that refuted his ability to walk, bathe himself, stand on his own two feet, feed himself- care for himself. Although Julius is an invalid in the eyes of others, he is quite the opposite in his own eyes.

And against all odds, he overcame the opposition. Julius seems to approach every challenge like a competition and overcomes it like a winner.
